WHIP MONTEZ

Whip Montez.png

Introducing “WHIP MONTEZ”, a Brooklyn-Born female Dominican MC and Radio Personality. The youngest of four, Whip was introduced to Hip-Hop at the age of 15 but didn’t take it serious until a few years later. She ultimately snatched the last name “Montez” after learning the real Maria Montez was the first Dominican actress to achieve Hollywood status in the 1930’s.

Whip is no stranger to the spotlight. She began her artistic journey early on as a ballet dancer at the age of 6. She later auditioned and got accepted to the prestigious Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Performing Arts, as a dance major. It was in high school where she landed a role as a dance extra in the iconic movie, Malcolm X (Directed by Spike Lee). From there, she scored a role as a back up dancer for R&B singer Ms. Jones. Her love for dance later transpired into a passion of music. Hip Hop music to be exact.  She began penning verses and exchanging bars amongst crowds, joining ciphers full of men. Whip was the only female to step up to the plate to battle any dude who stepped in front of her. She remembers “You always have to be ready to spit 16 bars at any given time especially as a female they see you as the weakest link”. Her love for music quickly gained her access into studios and work with producers looking for a female voice to feature on songs. She found herself invited time and time again to feature on other artist’s records.  Notably, Whip has recorded with artists such as Erick Sermon, Talib Kweli, Jaz-O, Ali Vegas, Mr. Cheeks, and Brooklyn icon Foxy Brown. In addition to this, Whip opened a show for the legendary duo Mobb Deep in Ohio, at Denison University.  In 2004, Whip began to work with New York City radio personality Cherry Martinez (Power 105.1), as show Producer. “I created topics for her shows and interview questions for guests. Whip proudly recognizes she was the creator of ‘Locked Down Love’ the biggest trending segment on the Cherry Martinez show.

However Whip was never a stranger to the radio scene, as a little girl she always had a a front row seat. The daughter of a well-known “Locutor” (Spanish radio personality) Rafael Almonte she practically grew up in a radio station. Whip claims “Radio being in her DNA. Almonte was a well respected disc jockey in the 50s and 60s in the Dominican Republic. So it comes as no surprise that she carry on her father’s proud legacy. Whip has been fortunate enough to have hosted her first radio show from 2013-2017 called “La Diva Latina Show”.  Where she specialized in live interviews which included noteworthy guests such as: the legendary MC Daddy Kane, DJ pioneer Kool DJ Red Alert, DJ Kid Capri, DJ Enuff, reality star Cyn Santana, singer Messiah, DJ Clark Kent and actor Malik Yoba to name a few. Her love of music has become the driving force behind her radio shows. These days you can catch Whip Montez Fridays, 8pm on LatinoMixx.com on her show “La Zone Urbana”.
